High!

Finally, I implemented the Quicksort algorithm and hacked together a
small "database" containing the geographical coordinates (at 1-arcsecond
accuracy) and names of currently 180 capitals in the world (there are a
few still missing, such as Astana (Kazakhstan) and those of two or three
small Pacific island states (Micronesia etc.), of which in each frame
the six closest are displayed on screen with their respective current
distance to the camera

Currently, the program is designed to generate animations of circular
Earth orbits (astronomers, forgive me for such ignorance of Kepler's
laws!) at arbitrary heights above ground, but in the future, with a more
and more complex Earth surface, it shall also contain the option of
surface journeys at any speed along real road, railway or ship routes.
In the coming months, I want to add a real terrain relief at horizontal
resolutions as high as possible (which, in any case, means using meshes
rather than heightfields), cities (with standardized buildings
corresponding to city maps, perhaps each city with one or two more
detailedly rendered landmarks) and simple vegetation.

Of course, to those of you who know me somewhat closer, it will be no
surprise to see a certain Asian country ;-) modelled by me more
thoroughly than other parts of the world - but on the other hand, I also
could simultaneously code a PoV version of my actual home town, Cologne
in Germany and insert it into this slowly developing virtual Earth.

And I invite anyone who likes to contribute renderings of his/her part
of the world to join me in this project - Capriccio was yesterday, the
future is PoVEarth!
