As I was thinking about the next POV-Ray project, I saw the cover of one of my
old raytracing books from 20 years ago with an aquarium. So, I started playing
around with modeling my aquarium, including the gravel bottom, the water
disturbed by the filter flow, etc.

I am getting close to finishing all of the modeling, but I thought I'd share
this WIP view. This is a medium resolution, medium anti-aliasing, no radiosity
render. What struck me about the results is that, probably due to a combination
of the textured wall surfaces and the low-wattage bulbs in the light fixtures,
it has the feeling of a high-ISO photograph that I kind of like. (I wonder if
emulating ISO in POV-Ray, similar to emulating focal blur would be an
interesting 4.0 feature?)

Comments welcome, and I'll post the final rendering soon.

You're not supposed to post a photo and try to pass it as a render😁

IIRC, Edouard Poor's camera macros had some ISO support. I thought I had
a copy too, but I cannot immediately find it.

Maybe, water your plant! :-) The image is looking really good. Guessing
the three electrical cords are pump, heater and light?

Google actually helped with this!

I do use his camera macros (v1.0), in my scenes. The uploaded one is not using
any focal blur, (yet). I looked through the code and I don't see anything
related to ISO. I would imagine it could be part of his stochastic focus code,
introducing noise based on ISO and lighting conditions on the focal plane, but I
didn't recognize anything like that.

Yes, you are correct about the cords. A lot of trial and error getting the
splines correct to lay them out. I really need to set up some test code so I
can better predict what they are going to look like. These are self-created
sweep macros using a cross section of the cord that gets rotated and banked
along the spline.

This version of the plant actually has two vines! That's about as much as I can
be trusted to care for a live plant.

Thanks. And it's one of my postings. :-) I tried a quick search too, but
had less luck.

Ah alright - probably my failing memory. Might explain why my search
turned up nothing useful.

So, mostly you are looking to introduce noise in the resultant image and
more noise the lower your ISO 'film' quality? If close, there is 'crand'
built into POV-Ray itself - but the noise introduce is not predictive
today.

Hmm, I wonder if the cells pattern scaled really small as a filter
pigment on a mostly transparent plane in front of your camera might work
- at least as a way to introduce some noise over the whole image?
Suppose ideally we'd only activate the ISO feature in the in focus
regions...

Bill P.

Aside:

My search did turn up:

http://megapov.inetart.net/manual-1.1/global_settings.html#film_exposure

which looks like an idea worth me playing with for a while as I've been
spending time trying to come up with ways to avoid high dynamic, channel
ranges internal to POV-Ray (povr).

HD (1920x1080), good anti-aliasing, radiosity...

124 hours rendering time. There are a few things I'd go back and fix in the
modeling, but probably not for another week hogging all the cycles on my laptop.
