Nice robots :)

Only thing that bothers me are the emissive eyes and chest plate,
they look a bit flat and artifical to me, especially with no surface
in range to give hint of being illuminated. Maybe the external surfaces
could be backlit by recessed lights instead to give a bit of structure
(e.g. with double_illuminate)?

Beter than double_illuminate: Backside illumination.
It's activated by providing a second value for the diffuse component of
the finish as follow:
diffuse 0.5 0.4

To keep the end result acurate, the summ of the two values should stay
less than 1. Part of the incident light is diffused back and another
part is duffused through the surface.

I would pick a different phrase, If I were you. :-;
In British English "backside" is normally used for buttocks. :-)

Look close and you'll see that the robots are already, ahem, "double
illuminated". :)

Thanks for the comments! Much appreciated.
