Posted as an example illustrating the idea of lighting-dependent transparency.
The top image is the unaltered render, the second shows the sphere as
transparent wherever it is not directly lit, the last has the sphere as
transparent wherever it is directly lit. The effect in the second and third
images were done via post processing.
