With transmit, the problem is solved in 3.7.

In the image (old scene from 1999), from top to bottom: 3.5; 3.6; 3.7

I presume the higher brightness level of the latter is due to different gamma
handling...?

Yes, this was a quick and dirty test, without any fixes. Just the old scene 
code, except for the #version changes.
