Well, here's the final image for now... only 19 hours rendering in the end, at
2400x1800 (relax, it's only 1024x768 here), using 995MB peak RAM.
I've spotted a few small issues, although none are really visible at this res,
and I'm still not sure whether I want bolder sunbeams off Lucy or whether it's
fine as it is... all the same, I'm very happy with this render.
Enjoy
Bill

Me too! :-D
Small improvements, and great title!

Ooh, and i forgot to say, thanks for all the comments here, it really helped me
nail the details. Especially Thomas de Groot, whose suggestion for the raised
gallery floor (or sunken courtyard, whichever!) made a big difference to the
final look!

I feel like I'm standing there, in this beautiful and pensive place.
Definitely worth the effort you put into it. An inspiring image--philosophically
*and* technically.

All the details, specially on the ground, make it very convincing. The
atmosphere helps a lot too... Great Work!

Great image indeed. I definitely want to go to that place, sit down quietly
in a shaded corner and let the atmosphere come over me for the rest of the
day. There probably is a little fountain, deeper in the building, where I
can quench my thirst. Food I have with me...

The details definitely provide for more realism. I think the lighting
and atmosphere are right on, something I have a hard time doing right.
Very well done.
