Cool. I tried to do this once using CSG to cut the letters out of a
block and gave up before I could get it working. Looks like your method
works better.

Why aren't the objects illuminated by the same lights that are
illuminating the surrounding walls?

If you could upload a macro to the Object Collection I'd be thankful.

I'll have to play with this at home, but I think it should be feasable
with intersection ... I'll see if I can get my initials in a block like
that.

I will try to get the source up as soon as I get home on Friday, to show you the
technical method.
Until then I can just say that each "letter" outline is not random. It's alot
easier to do it with only two letters, but when there are three its a lot less
controllable.
Originally the vertical bar for the J was in the center, but this messed up the
G. I also had the J and W, E and O, F and O, F and D in the same cubes, that is
only 4 with no solid squares. This also produced some funky shapes.

Ah, so it can't be done with arbitrary strings or fonts? That's too bad.

I decided to try with my initials (LEH) and came up with this _VERY_
simplified test image. Just a single block with the three initials.
Fortunately, my initials were very easy to implement as simple unions of
boxes. These were then differenced from a cube. Note, difference not
intersection.
I don't know if this shape is physically possible, there might be
'floating' chunks in the middle someplaces. But it works as a POV image.
I did end up using rounded boxes instead of regular boxes, and I
probably should change to spotlights as well. But as I said, this was
just a simple initial test.

Surname in two parts, with high-ambient object and radiosity.
The third dimension looks to be a challenge; the differing widths of the letters
don't make for a straightfoward vertical cut.
