It's not a POV-Ray image, I know, but the idea popped into my head and my
fundamental incapacity for self-restraint just kicked in.

 Best Regards,

Got it. Clue inside :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when...
you ever saw a beautiful scenery and regretted not to take your 6"
reflective ball and a digital camera, thinking "this would have been a
perfect light probe"

There used to be a subsidiary of HP called Dymec -- and this WAS their
logo. (Although it was slightly squashed vertically from the HP logo.)

I used to work in an electronic calibration lab, and I worked on a
couple of Dymec DVMs -- but that was quite some time ago.

Well, not sure if this qualifies as a visual pun, but at least
it's bad and you don't need to be a GRANDMASTER to come up with
a fitting name for this creature.

I believe I may have "caught" this one. Nice job.

Thanks! It went more smoothly than anticipated. Funny how you
get instant expression just by slapping an eye on something ;)

Yeah that's it, a set of low steps might be referred to as a 'step'
