It started off as a self-portrait, but it looks nothing like me. I have a lot
more artifacts. And eyes. A version with radiosity is rendering, but there
are some ugly artifacts under the brim of the hat so I'm not sure where that
will end up. More problems than I can count, but I was just curious to see how
the skin would work. No tricks really, just brute force. Well, I have to go.
That smirk is making me nauseous.

So, what modeling tool did you use?
And yes, that's nice SSS. :-)

Be prepared to witness one of the most practical uses of pointers (for
all of those new C programmers who insist that pointers are useless, I
smite you).

Wings3D. The only trick for the SSS is that any other objects like the eyes or
teeth will show through the semi-transparent skin. But if you use a little
mesh csg, it cleans that right up. The total rendering time was around 8
hours.

Really nice. I really like the texture on the hat, too --- that works very well.
I can only see two things I'd change --- his ear is pretty far back (jaw too
long or skull too short?) and as you say, his smile. I think that the smile is
so irritating because it is too flat, and all his teeth are lined up along the
plane of the face. As Andrew Loomis puts it, "Take a bite out of a piece of
bread and
examine the hole; you'll never draw flat lips again." In my case 'never' might
be a bit optimistic ;)

Not bad! Just get the eye area a bit deeper into the head, the area is too
much outside. Otherwise it is a nice success.

I think it's rather the scary all-white eyes that makes you nauseous. The
smirk just makes it worse! =]
Nice work.
