Here's a scene I did using some mecha models, Chris Colefax's City include
and Rune's particle systems.

Any suggestions on making it better?

I looks like a very good start - the light does look a little fake, however, 
it might help if you had a number of light sources / had light sources that 
would throw softer shadows. also, possibly, if you darkened the scene a 
little - it would make the mech's shield much clearer - maybe have it glow 
on nearby structures - have a look at the documentation on media.

That's about all I can suggest I'm afraid - I'm sure there's a few people on 
here more qualified than I am to give a useful response

Looks pretty cool!

Not much - maybe replace some of the buildings with more sci-fi looking
ones?

I wanted to do something similar once, but I couldn't find the time to learn
how to replace buildings using Chris' include - if I remember right it is
not that hard though.

For me personally mecha are futuristic, I'd love to see them in some
futuristic (not contemporary) city.

But that's just me - a good effort anyway!
