I have been trying to get a UTAH type landscape to work for months now. I
think I have achieved moderate success at getting the base landscape. The
following image is a isosurface landscape that is a combination of DEM for
the Grand Canyon,f_snoise3d for stratification and some extra noise added
to give it more character.

This is still work in progress with no atmospherics, clouds et al.

You have the right kinds of colours, and the shapes look pretty good 
too. Obviously needs further work to make it really look REAL, but this 
is a good start.

Excellent start!

Something seems a little wrong on the valley floor (holes in the
isosurface?) maybe caused by very thin slabs of rock.

Thanks. There still a very plastic like quality to the cliff on the near
right side of the image. Better texturing might help I guess.

Thanks.

I have noticed those too. I am going to try and increase the max_gradient,
but I think this might be due to the noise function that I am using. I was
going to overlay the ground level with a different isosurface or
heightfield to make it a more gentle rolling ground rather than a flat
surface.

Yes, it probably is the noise function. I have had those too. Does not work
equally well in all directions within the same isosurface. Indeed, the best
solution is another isosurface (or whatever) for the ground.
