Are you using a blue ambient value or is it radiosity? IMHO it would be better
with less blue in the shadows.

Source for the mf posted earlier in response to a question by David
Fontaine. As it's a work in progress I'm loath to post the entire
scene file.

It's radiosity, using a yellow sun and blue sky to give white snow. I
may darken the sky later (which will darken the blue shadows.)
