It may be strange (and yes, I'm talking about these 2 renders) but I can see
how the word "cartoon" isn't completely accurate for describing this effect.
From what I've seen so far this process wouldn't be totally confined to that
realm with certain artist skills at the controls.
I know, I'm sounding like I don't like cartoons or something; sorry, never
meant that to be.

I would suggest this.  Instead of having a 'hard' thershold, have a 'soft'
one, probably with a linear falloff over a user-specified range.

Uh, no... not really.  Didn't occur to me until you said it.
I was implying there is probably plenty of artistic uses for this effect
aside from any cartoon-like things.
