just realised there is no shadow under the jet stream - any suggestions on
how to make a shadow with media - without making the media so thick it
knackers up the effect?

Maybe put a couple concentric cones in the flame, with completely 
transparent textures, a slight "bumpy" normal, a small ior, and 
caustics/photons. Or just add absorbing media to the flame, if it is all 
emission.
