I don't know...
I kind of liked the soft-focus effect the old image had.
Is there any way to re-enable the old glow method?

The old image didn't have radiosity, and the glows had an infinite
radius.

Yes, simply don't specify a radius or specify a larger one. It will be a
bit slower, though, since it won't be able to skip calculating glows
further away.

This is neat for the effect you were attempting here, but I'd like to see
the tree as a "tree."
