I just modeled this REAL fast (of course I did follow a tutorial :) Its made
with Wings3D. I was really impressed, It won't get rid of my text editor but
I can definetly see myself using it for some organic stuff. I have a few
questions though. In Wings I changed the materials of the hexagons to black
so that it'd look more soccerbally. I saved it as .3ds and then used
crossroads to convert it to pov 3.0, Now its all white! Blechk. Is there
another, better, possibly newer program I should be using to covert things?
I'd rather see it converted to a mesh2 as well. I've seen other POVers use
wings and considering its open source maybe the author would consider
including a mesh1 and mesh2 pov export to the program? Has anyone contacted
him about this before?

Thanks,
Corey

Just texture it. Or have a look at Steven Cox's UVMapper
http://www.uvmapper.com/

Excuse me, but this looks more like a bump map, than real surface
displacement. Anyway, I assume you're telling the truth and these are
triangles.. Does it "waste" a lot of triangles? What is the memory
consumation of this ball? I downloaded several modellers through time but
never liked any of them.. But I've never tried Wings3d and don't know
anything about it... Is it free?

I'll seek on google now, but let me know anyway if it is REALLY free, or
just a half-way, ad-supported, crippled, beta version full of bugs.

Regards,
Hugo

Not only is it really free, but its open source. Its basically a clone of
nendo.
http://www.wings3d.com/

Looks great for organic stuff. Its not a scene modeler or a complete package
by any means though. That cool spaceship posted just a few days ago by
Coridon Henshaw (called the 4rth Age) was modelled with it I think.

Okay thanks! I looked at the official homepage now. I agree with you, we
need mesh2 for POV and I don't know where to get it, moreover for free.
Preferred would be a direct POV output from Wings. I wonder why he didn't
make that, when he mentions POV several times. It would be pretty easy!
Maybe there's an unofficial version that supports POV...?

This ball looks very strange to me. There is a sharp change in the surface
normal at the edge of every hexagon where the round edge begins. The ball
looks like a csg made of clipped spheres and tori. If Wings can generate a
wire-frame, I would very much like to see it.

Regarding Wings3d > OBJ > POV mesh2

I found:
http://www.geocities.com/who3d/Downloads.html

But it fails to read the OBJ. :o( Very strange because I just had a look
at the OBJ file-format in Wordpad and it's very simple, and very similar to
a mesh2 format, actually... So, Corey, if nothing else works, we can write
our own OBJ > POV converter in pov script.

Maybe it wouldn't even be slower than to have a third program involved to
convert.

Maybe this has been coded already?

Hugo

Oh no.. I had a look at POV's abilities to read text files, and to my regret
I see it's very strict on formatting.. I can't build a conversion tool
because POV can't just read some text into a string.. I can't help... :o(
