The spheres will eventually be replaced with deciduous trees, and the 
cones with conifers. The former like low slope, low altitude areas. The 
latter just like low slope areas regardless of altitude. Is this 
realistic? Any comments or suggestions?

It looks realistic to me. Much will depend also on the textures used for 
the landscape, especially the ridges, in combination with the trees.

A nice draft!
But you can also replace the spheres with m&m's and the cones with 
chocolate chunks... The scene seems somehow edible.
