There appears to be a strange echo in the mist on the small hill that 
right in the middle of the picture.

I look at your image and And's "mountain scene2 2" and the common ..
sensibilities.  it'd be great if you and And were to collaborate on some ..
verdant landscape.

I believe that what you see as an echo are fringes of mist shadows cut 
off by the mountains. Watched more frontally, they would fan-out around 
the sun.

One step further.

I took some time to play with the different smoke generators available 
in POV (Rune Johansen, Michael Carnholm) but was not satisfied with the 
results when used on a larger scale (i.e. landscape) than developed for 
apparently. So, I fell back to the use of a simple cone with a perturbed 
spiral density map for the time being.
