I would use a reflective floor. Like reflective glass, or reflective
metal. If metal, I also would use a NORMAL and give it a crusty surface.
Consider chrome or silver as metals as they are color-neutral. Or use a
very glossy and reflective black floor.

Sorry, I overlooked your inquiry nearly, because the newsgroups topics 
are overflooded with the words "help" and "inquiry" at the moment. Most 
of the questions are answered since many years and the questioner is 
longer active here as the answers given. So I wonder a litte bit at the 
moment.

To your Image: I think the contrast between your rainbow colored main 
object and the black and white background (your floor) is o.k., but I 
would take the other way round. Make the tiles at the ground to "real" 
tiles using more reflection and subsurface scattering. Since I assume 
that your main object is an isosurface I will propose to cancel all 
reflection and add a small disturbance to the surface (f_noise_3d). Use 
only two colors (and not the complete rainbow) and place the object a 
bit out of the middle.

If your torus shape is an isosurface then you can let the floor be an isosurface
too, sink your shape slightliy into it and make it look like the floor is
repelled by it.

Those tiles need some variable reflection.
Add something like :
finish{reflection 1 fresnel}
and
interior{ior 1.6}

Both white and dark tiles can have the same reflection value, or 
something similar. They can easily share the same ior, but, here also, 
you can use two different iors.

contact that "sinner" directly instead of hijacking the thread of
another member to propagate your emotions.

i think, I might know distantly that sinner you speak about in this
thread, and i believe he is quite a nice guy and can be talked to. So,
here is my advise. if this guy's threads have offended you, simply
contact him and let him know. I personally would never use the threads
of unrelated persons to criticize someone, that's not that cool nowadays.

Give a try and get that guy who offended you, and let him know. He's not
biting. :-)

Is the intent rather dramatic/uncanny or a dreamy mood? (dreamy would suggest
using something like media while "uncanny" could demand to make light more
contrasted and from directive source).

If it's like an apparition from another world, why not give it a glow with
slight "emission" influencing radiosity? what about having it hover over the
floor?

Or is the object rather supposed to blend and appear common like a decorative
ceramic? Why would it be on a kitchen's floor... I guess it would be falling
towards it, then tilt it and create an even more tilted version with the
ghosting feature to make it like a motion blurred instant capture of its fall,
the moment before it breaks...

The colored object can change very much the composition of picture depending on
its rotation around vertical axis, make sure you pick the most satisfying to
your need: warm (redish) colors tend to appear closer than cold(bluish) ones...

Before setting up (not too strong) Uberpov blurry (roughness keyword) reflection
with fresnel, and if it's not already used, I would also give a try  at some 2
bounces Radiosity because it might behave better at the tiles' joints and in the
shadows around the colored object.

I would lower reflectivity of the colored object or moderate it with a fresnel
as well... unless you want to make it look wet, but then some kind of puddle
below would have to be modeled


adding a very small depth of field using aperture would make it slightly
photographic.

I would try to tint very slightly the light to give a clue as to whether it's
tungsten, neon, sunlight? with a blush tint from a sky sphere to balance it? or
sunrise, sunset?

That's all I think about right now. :-)
