"Real world" grapes, only lit by diffuse light from the windows were
used as reference and the rendering matches them quite well.
I used scattering media for the grapes as POV-Ray media interacts nicely
with only GI lit scenes - given enough samples are used.

By adding 1.500.000 hairs (each made of around 60 triangles), still not
even close to the amount of hairs a real cat has.
I wrote a little C++ program, using the OpenSceneGraph library
http://www.openscenegraph.org/
to do it.

Thanks.

It is just GI. Using only radiosity with enough samples, a powerful
machine and still a lot of patience gives this result all by itself ;)

Mind rendering one or two of these images at a 16:10 aspect ratio? Would

Sure. Currently part 8 - the final part - is rendering and will take
till tomorrow but I have access to the machine used for this little
project until Saturday - enough time for one or two more.
Which part numbers would you like the most?

Yes. IIRC this scene, featuring Vermeer atelier, started more than 10
years ago. If you search the newsgroup for Vermeer you should find some
images. I've even reconstructed the virginals as seen in "The Music
Lesson" but choose to not use it together with the cat.
The cat is based on the old DAZ-Millenium-Cat but I did completely
overhaul the original model and reworked the rigging to be anatomical
more correct.

Well, I should not do so much modeling works like yours.

In fact, the cat is somewhat strange because of its cross-eyes. Or its two eyes
are too close.

I think they're all great -- but I guess I personally favour part 4.

Vermeer's cat is indeed based on the look and behavior of our neighbors
cat, visiting us daily. Our own cat is a completely different breed - in
every aspect.

Thanks a lot, Alain. While there are some pretty good pro-renders in the
web, I was trying not to focus too much on the technical aspects but
somehow capture the *spirit* of this particular cat - without crossing
the borderline to pure cliché.

out of interest and as my memory might fade away, any links to any

Well done!

No doubt you are familiar with _Tim's Vermeer_:

So the obvious self-referential thing to do would be re-render them as very fine
paintings. :)

No, I wasn't. Thanks for the link. Now I'm trying to view the whole
movie somewhere.
But I'm familiar with the book by Philip Steadman that seems to have
been Tim's inspiration - and - on a personal note - do not find
convincing at all.

Considering the results of recent elections and votes they might be right.

I think he photographed his neighbor's cat and pasted the photos into the scene
;-P

All of the cat's poses are SO wonderfully-done; the rigging is amazing. Well,
the entire scene is amazing and beautiful! And 1,500,000 cat hairs-- wow!

Beautiful! Really beautiful! I am in awe!

That must have taken a good while to create. The posing is spot on. I am
presuming Blender? If so, how long did it take you to get to grips with? I keep
threatening myself with taking the plunge but have not yet got around to it.
(Daunting interface, different way of working, inherent inertia, etc, etc).

Also, what hardware did you use for the render, and how long did it take?

Cheers,

Simon.

And BTW thank you for ruining my innocent view of this cat, now I'm
seeing her doing nasty gestures all the time ;)

Sure. If it would only hold still in that particular pose until I find
my camera...
