One step further: this time a test for multiple clusters of crystals.
Next step should be the whole cave...

After my last post, I guess I was subconsciously reading the titles of

You got me... I'm such a show-off! Nah, I'm really humble: it's all

"In the valley of Liebendor past the mountains of Throng..."
I like this one best.
(I didn't care for the moss and rock texture in the previously posted
yellow version. They looked too, um, flat? ... But, I would never tell
_you_ that)

Why not? You know it, I know it, so... Really, I need criticism: I'm
known to be too lazy to correct flaws until someone tells them publicly.

I like all these crystal images, but my favorite thus far is this clear
quartz one casting rainbows of light on the surrounding rock.
In my last two apartments I've hung glass prisms in windows catching
morning sunlight. Having brilliant spreads of color show up on the walls
around me as I drink my first coffee of the day always greatly brightens
my mood.
(And that deadly caffeine - being discussed in povray-off-topic - saves
my mood on the cloudy days ;-) )

Yes, photons+dispersion gives very nice results... but it's very slow,
specially if you add focal blur into the mix. Of course I will use them
on the final render of the cave, but I'm guessing a render time of more
than 12h...

That's a very nice idea, if you have a window that catches morning
sunlight. Mine doesn't until 10 AM or so, but at least I've direct
sunlight until sunset.
> (And that deadly caffeine - being discussed in povray-off-topic -

Ah... fortunately I don't read p.off-topic, so I can happily continue
to drink lots of coffee every day (and not only early on the morning).

I like the first one for the rainbow refractions displayed on the rocks.
That gets lost on the mossy versions.
But, I don't know, I have a thing for purple and pink (maybe too much
estrogen). And I want to steal those mushrooms for my own use, so I
have to vote for the third one.

I don't want to eat them ... those days are long gone.
Interestingly though, when I saw your first crystal I wondered what it
tasted like. (Is it salty? That looks salty.)

Hmm, table salt (sodium chloride) grows in cubic crystals and its hard to get
them big.
But I know what you mean...

I don't really know, as I have not been there, but judging by the
lighting, I would say this is very close to the cave entrance. :)
Anyhow, I'm already working on modeling mushrooms like the ones you
described (Psilicybe semperviva). ;)

Reminds me, that we could need some sort of mushroom-making macro:
defining stem thickness and straightness and length, and if poors or
gills, with or without stem ring, hat flatness and diameter and such
things. :-D

Ok, here is the last one, using more credible mushrooms... should be
the final one, not because I'm totally satisfied, but because I've moved

I just think, the moss (IF that is moss) is too olive green to be real.
Should be a little bit plainer, that green. Want to see plenty tiny
leaves, too. I love that scene.
Oh, hey, and what about some greenish fluorescent mushrooms having a
little glow around them? :-D

Here is the final (I promise) version, using a bit of subsurface{} on
the mushrooms. Also, the moss is a bit greener as Sven suggested. The
focal blur has a few more samples, so finally it took almost 11h to
render...

I like the color of the moss. I love the crystals. But this line of
shrooms bugs me. While my eye is looking at the centerpiece crystal, my
brain is tugging me to the two shrooms with the same s-shaped stem.
Which then makes me aware that there is a line of shrooms.
I almost mentioned in the last version that I would change one of those
two stems. And it might not even be as noticeable this version because
the foreground s-stem is in shadow. But I can't unsee it to tell. :)
I'm not a big fan of the focal blur. It looks fine on the background
shrooms top-left, but it looks cheesy on the front left clump of shrooms.

The similar stems are just a coincidence, because every mushroom has a
randomly generated sphereweep for the stem, and them they are randomly
rotated around y. Indeed the spheresweep has only 4 points, so it's not
that difficult to end up with similar stems.

This one is not casual, but a flaw on my thinking... I used a pigment
function to place the mushrooms in clumps, and I badly chose "leopard"
without realizing it is too regular.

Well, I used only 42 samples, so it's a bit grainy, yes...

Yes, I could see that. I sometimes throw random numbers on the floor
just to "stir the soup" if I don't like what I'm getting. (In fact, I've
got a story about that coming up soon...)
