I was just playing a bit with TopMod and got a nice gem geometry. I
could not resist...

And now you need to give this image to a charming, wonderful woman of
your choice. :-D

I would use an underground of cut, polished rock material. Might look
even better again. But it is marvelous, as it is.

Gems are as nice theme, but the wheel on gems is already round.
If you go to youtube and type in rendering a diamond
you get things like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuhHam3_uwY
I think this is how it should look. Ok, Octane is a commercial program, but if
we stay with Freeware, this one looks good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebsXFEVwlWM
The only Gem, nobody can render at this time is the OPAL.
Diamonds, Ruby's etc. is just some sort of more or less coloured glas,
with another IOR and maybe a bit Dispersion ...

True, but I am just messing around and not interested in realism at all.
This is thomasite ;-)

Well, I wonder if with version 3.7 opal is not within reach. I seem to
remember some striking examples a while ago here.

Believe me... it's ******* difficult. I'm still regretting to have
taken the challenge Theo presented to me privately (well, at least it
served to get me poving again).
I tried a lot of things, but only got somewhat closer using multiple
emission medias. It still lacks some very distinctive features... and of
course, it's not animatable.

Hmmm... I see what you mean indeed. Still, this is pretty good!

Yes, much better... but I would make it even more clear. Also, what's
the IOR of thomasite?

Have to pop it into the trusty Tom Swift gem-o-lyzer in the Flying Lab...

Samuel T. Benge made a nice bright opal with media and reflecting meshes inside
of an object.

Well, this being the only example of Thomasite in the world, I am happy
to say that its ior is 1.45. It is a rather cloudy gem so I cannot make
it clearer :-)

Here is one from 2007 (I think).
It was made by the late Steve Paget. I asked him to make an opal ring
for my wife. He did this as well.

Yes indeed, I remember this one. I think Steve would have done an even
better job now with 3.7's irid improvements.

one of the best (if not the best?) POV Artists out there, Jamie!
Great work.
