It has been a while since I visited Cathy and friends, so I decided to
have a stop at the dystopia to see how they fared. I was not disappointed.
Here is a first wip of the environment. The basic idea came from a
painting, the painter of which I have forgotten the name. The octagonal
basins and the back wall are inspired from that.
The plumbing are made with the help of the macros by Glenn McCarter, he
used in an IRTC image back in 2003.
To remedy the 'falling building' syndrome, I used the FieldCam() macro
by Doctor John, for which my well-meant thanks :-)
Ambient lighting comes from a HDRI map, supplemented by a single CIE
light source.
As said in the title, Gravity has nothing at all in common with the film
of the same name. Here, gravity is what you may feel (like me) when
standing on top of a high building or a the brink of a deep well. Not a
particularly pleasant sensation of the Earth's attraction... ;-)

You're welcome. Strangely enough, I was talking about the macro with a
friend a couple of days ago. That and a few other pieces of information
have persuaded him to come back to Povray after many years absence (I
believe the last version he used was v3.0 - possibly earlier).
BTW Stephen, if you're reading this, your name also came up in

And incestuous too. I'm working with a guy whom I last worked with six
years ago. And before that for ten years on an oil rig. We were both
doing different jobs, of course.

Well, since I drink at the White Hart. I expect that sort of thing.
I have a few tales from there.
Not long after I started working in "Computing". I met a consultant
whose company had just won a contract in Tibet at an out of the way
monastery. The job had something to do with cataloguing something or
other. He said that it would take along time. I wonder how it is going?

For now, this will be the final render. Some minor changes are still
possible but those need more study.

Looks a lot better now with the people in the foreground, bridge and large
cylinder/tank added. I think where the pipes go into the pool needs some kind of
change as it looks like they just disappear, either a hole slightly larger than
the cylinder or some kind of surround where they enter it would probably look
better.

It is a big good job you have made here, I just have one critic
concerning the granite which seems ( but is is a personal opinion) too
smooth.
I like the people and the cat - can we have a close-up of the cat?

Thanks. Indeed, I forgot about the pipes :-( I wanted to make the hole
slightly larger as you suggest and forgot about it.

Thanks indeed. The stone texture is one of those things I want to change
in the (near?) future.
The cat is Poser (of course). Like some Poser figures, it is not really
good at close up and it misses - in particular - a good normal map, and
its eyeball map is somewhat weird. Other figures which are more than
basic are Kate2 and Ben2 (the children here) which have hardly been
developed further than their Poser 6 versions. Not only are the skin
maps basic, also their geometry shows a number of severe defects. A
shame for such a program imho.

In the previous image, the pupils are dilated as the light was rather

For sure, the pupils are too rounded for a cat, and it seems hungry.
However it is good enough for some scenes where it is not close to the
camera. Like you made.

She is going to be a force to reckon with. If she makes it to
adolescence. ;-)
A few comments about pipework.
Pipes that width would be supported by a yoke or framework in places
along it length. You never rest a flange on a wall or both could be
damaged. And as for it disappearing into a wall without a gap. That is
okay as they are sometimes packed with flame damping material (cement
like material).
Great atmosphere Thomas.

Yes, and somehow, I know she will make it. She is the kind of person
that survives (an thrives) in difficult situations like the world she
has to cope with: one of the possible/likely scenarios deriving from our
own.

I was afraid somebody would come up with that as I secretly also had
considered the problem and discarded it for the time being out of pure

The eye lids are to human shaped. Cat's eyes are normaly much more
rounded. Normaly, the irises show almost entirely and you see some white
almost all the way around, except some very small gap top and bottom.
Also, I suspect that it's just a dog model morphed to look like a cat.
The cat can elongate itself about 20% from rump to the base of it's
skull. The shoulders are VERY mobile. They can be shifted verticaly at
least 2/3 of the hight of the torso, and moved forward by almost as
much. Both fore and back limbs can be crossed at the elbows or knees and
moved outward enough to be horizontal for about 120° of lateral movement
freedom.

If you search some models (like cat) go to TF3DM.com site, which
supplies free models.

Hmm, yes. However, I need to animate them in Poser to be useful for
me... those models do not have the right geometry.

The big problem with software like Poser, and to some extent Daz, is
that they provide a few /good/ models, in terms of geometry etc, but
also a mound of trash. I am not even sure if the models they sell are
better than what they provide with the package. After all, many of those
models are made by non-professionals.
[start rant; waves red flag]
It is really a shame and I consider it as one of those hateful outcomes
of the free market free enterprise policies.
[end rant; folds red flag]

Sometimes, I like to just zoom in into the scene and see what happens. I
did that with Gravity and immediately noticed necessary improvements to
the backwall texture and the stone texture. After changing those, this
is the result.

I opened the eyes more, which is generally a more cat-like aspect
although they often half-close them too, depending on circumstances. I
have not been owned by cats for nothing during most of my life :-) I any
case, I think that the iris map provided with the model is not really good.

It is a good work. I made no critique to not disturb your conscience.
No, really a good work you have made here, I like the details in this
picture, anywhere you zoom you got a good image, I mean you can obtain
different picture from the main one, example zooming on one people or on
a pipe. Many focus make a good image. I hope to make me understand.

J'ai parfaitement bien compris ;-)
I think the same. Zooming in highlights some obvious errors. However, be
careful. Often a less detailed object or texture does well in the
background and would be overkill if details were cranked up. There is a
balance to find between what is necessary and what is acceptable or even
useful.

Is there a list or repository somewhere of the series? A search of povray.org
turns up only 4 images, "Age of Innocence" (#1), "On the Streets" (#7), "Paris
by Night - 1951," and the present project, plus a cameo in the architecture
ensevelie/"On the Plain" scene.

Hi Cuz
At the TC-RTC, if you are a member, you will be able to look at the
Competition Archive Area. Where you will be able to see all of the
entries. I am sure that you would be able to find more of them there.
We have plans to update the site and one of the new features will be a
gallery or member's portfolio. Just for you, here is a sneak preview of
Thomas's.

They are not actually tagged Cathy's World but...
For comparison here is mine. And I must point out most of mine are
entered just to make up the numbers and are meant to be humorous. :-)
The animations do not link/show properly. :-(

The Portfolio offers a view of most of Cathy's World. Except for p.b.i.
there is no other public repository. The official names are as follows
but may have been presented under a different name:
#1 Age of Innocence
(http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/message/%3C45699b36%40news.povray.org%3E/#%3C45699b36%40news.povray.org%3E)
#2 Stalker Tunnel (aka Age of Curiosity;
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3C462209fe@news.povray.org%3E/?ttop=351651&toff=1650)
#3 A Time of Change (somewhere on p.b.i.)
#4 The Bridge Builders (TC-RTC)
#5 De Dulle Griet (unfinished)
#6 Captain Nemo (aka N; TC-RTC)
#7 On the Streets
(http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/message/%3C49afd5d5%40news.povray.org%3E/#%3C49afd5d5%40news.povray.org%3E)
#8 At the Cenotaph (unfinished;
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3C4a87f5e8@news.povray.org%3E/?ttop=319310
#9 On the Plains (TC-RTC)
#10 Across the Fields (TC-RTC)
#11 Glass (TC-RTC)
#12 Gravity
'Paris la Nuit' (TC-RTC) is not officially part of the series although
Cathy appears in it.
Other known series are: Tina Chep (6 scenes) and Iskander (14 scenes).
My oldest series was called "Les Annales" which paralleled Gilles Tran's
Oyonale before I even knew that last one to exist! Great minds think
alike ;-)
