Just giving the latest release a test drive ... this wip still has some
work left to go, not 100% happy with the brass but it's coming along nicely.

Like this version better ... I had forgotten that in a layered texture,
the finish on outer texture rules. The needle is now a stylized arrow of
sorts ... and a touch of radiosity.

Very nice, but I prefer the metal texture of the first one :-)

Really nice.
2 tickling issues:
 - White needle on white (majority) background ?
 - the shadow of the needle seems fake: the south picky needle displays
a shadow which looks like mercury astronomical symbol.
Background idea: an image map of an actual map (either nautical map or
very detailed map of some geographical map)

i was comparing the two as well and did a little more tweaking on the
color map. it does need more of the darker (handled, tarnished) brass
showing through. maybe i need a texture_map for the result i'm looking
for. povray ... what an adventure!

yeah ... not the best choice. tips got to be red tho

maybe one more smashed cone on each side would make it look like
feathers on an arrow

I like the second version better. Maybe if you made the needle a
yellower shade of white there would be more contrast.

I can’t see if the needle is a cylinder or not but if it were flat and
wider I think that would work.
I like what I can see of the ornamentation on the ends.
