Once every so many years, I intend to learn Chinese, and each time the
project petters slowly out.
In 2003, I built this landscape, to which I added the ideograms and seal
with a paint program. I don't remember if I ever showed it here.
Now, I revisited the scene, upgraded the code to 3.7 beta 38, and added the
ideograms and seal with screen,inc.
Finally, also with screen.inc, I gave the image the aspect of old paper.
I like it :-)

So do I and I think that I have seen it before but I might be confusing
it with one of several I've seen in RL. Yours is very convincing.
BTW Why sign it on the bottom when you have applied your chop? ;-)

A larger version here.
Some technical details:
- height_field made with Leveller
- water texture by Gilles Tran
- island, boat, and figure are meshes, originally modelled with Hamapatch
- trees through macros by Tom Aust and Paul T. Dawson

Forgot to tell that the mist is just a ground fog. The trick here is that it
is inclined towards the camera, in such a way that it plunges into the lake
a little behind the island.

All the birds have flown up and gone;
A lonely cloud floats leisurely by.
We never tire of looking at each other -
Only the mountain and I.

No, you do not *rotate* the ground fog, but orient the up parameter
differently, like this:
up <0, 0.5, -0.2>
Simple and effective :-)

Thank you, Marc. I think this is the only instance where I used this trick,
by orienting the up parameter of the ground fog. Since then I forgot about
it (or did not need it, which is almost the same)

Thank you, Bill. Sometimes I think I did better work in the past than
nowadays... I remember I had a series in mind with different perspectives
and in different scroll styles. I never went any further but it might be
worthwhile to explore that line of work again. So much to do, really; or
rather so many different ideas to explore...

Yes, that is very useful. I totally forgot about it, until I revisited the

The Jade Emperor looks kindly on me... However:
Buy only wine, when you have money -
Never buy land in the Southern Mountains!
That draws tax collectors, to your dismay,
Under the misty blue pine trees.
Which are wise words by Li Deng.

I guess it's a proper haiku in the original language...? From the little

Interesting, what makes you say that?
I must admit to knowing it from J. D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey, not
from a study of haiku.

AFAIK a haiku has three lines, each with a certain number of syllables
(IIRC it is 5-7-5).

True, but as western languages are much less suited for that than Japanese,
one can also follow the mood/intention rules instead within the three lines.
For translations, the syllabic rule is almost impossible to follow if one
wants to catch the meaning correctly. There are western poets who have
followed the strict syllabic rules, but with few satisfactory results. It
sounds much more artificial.
Apart from the English speaking world, there are a few Dutch haiku poets of
quality. Dutch and English seem to be rather suited to this verse form.

Me being a nitpicker, I conclude that the article supports my layman
assertion, and that the poem in question - though qualifying as an
"English haiku" or "haiku in English" - does indeed not qualify as a
regular "haiku" ;-)

I concur and it is not in Japanese, either.

Nice. Reminds me of Mick Hazelgrove's work
(http://www.mhazelgrove.fsnet.co.uk/ for all the youngsters who
don't remember him).

There is something about cg art, especially ray-tracing, that seems to
elevate the art of the pastiche. This is a gorgeous example.

You are absolutely correct, Jim. There is that fascination in trying to
recreate in cg what exists otherwise. It feels like the early photographers
recomposing early paintings, sometimes to excellent effect.
Happily, cg is not only that, but it plays a significant role.

Excellent. Your having achieved such a faithful interpretation of the
original style, an interesting direction for a series would be a
succession of increasingly interpretive, less faithful variants.

Yes, I have been thinking along that line too :-) This one really was an
exercice in reproduction, also for technical reasons. Next steps would
necessarily depart from that, if only to allow creative freedom in again.
Maybe one day. Life is short ;-)
