The lever could be on either side. At this point, I don't even remember
which side eventually became standard. I haven't touched a typewriter in 3+
decades... :-)

This looks like what I had. :-)

Eventually one side was standardized on, and I think it was the right side,
and people were taught to put the handwritten thing they're copying on the left.

Just to clarify, my original model had it on the right side (surely
because I did a mistake), but it come out on the left on this image because
I had flipped the camera horizontally.

Positively not: I recall hacking away on my dad's "modern" mechanical
typewriter, and that a "carriage return" would involve *pushing* (not pulling)
the carriage back, so the maneuver must have been carried out with the left
hand (given that, regardless of which side the lever was attached, a carriage
return maneuver must have moved the carriage from the left to the right). This
would also load a spring, that would provide for the energy required to move
the carriage leftwards while typing.

(It strikes me that during all the development of the mechanical typewriter,
nobody ever tried loading an even stronger spring by the carriage-return
action, and use its energy also to help actuate the type levers.)

I don't recall the brand or model my dad owned; but as operating the lever was
all that was needed to start a new a line - combining the function of both
carriage return and a line feed (with a configurable number of "ticks" per
line; I think it was either two or three) - I guess it must have been a Unix
machine :P

I remember when you had to hit the c/r before the l/f or the type would start
before the carriage got to the beginning.

Sorry, I forgot to say something important about this scene: I saved *a lot*
of render time by using MegaPOV "max_trace_level 1" for the area_light. It's
a shame I just discovered this killer feature of MegaPOV... how I managed to
miss it so many years? :(

? Are you talking about *electrical* typewriters? Otherwise I fail to decode
your sentence.

Oh no! Left side has become the standard! I don't know when that happened
though. Like Christoph, I used to 'borrow' my dad's typewriter (he was a
journalist) and remember that quite well. The oldest he has had (1920's
1930's) were left sided already.

Good point! You are not the only one: you have opened my eyes. Thanks for
waking me up. :-)
Some would say: RTFM... ;-)

Nice. I like the portrait format beter, but I prefer the original wall paper
over the new one. Not that it's not a nice one, but it looks out of place here.
