Since I had it all set up anyway I ran a comparison using the technique 
mentioned by Jaime in general.

The setup uses Jaime's studio lighting kit and his included demo's rad 
settings and predefined light setup #5.  The first uses two passes 
scaling up from 320 to 640. The second, same thing but the save pass 
adds the blur sample to the camera.  The subject is located at the 
origin and the camera is pointed at the origin.  The focal_point is the 
camera_position*.9
