Sorry, at first my Outlook Express stupidly showed the message inside an
older thread with the same subject, so I re-sent with a slightly different
subject, then I tried but wasn't able to delete the first posts from the
server... :-(

Actually there were pre-Christian celebrations of the winter solstice, but
the English word "Christmas" obviously refers to Christ (Christ's mass) and
seems to date back to approx. year 1000...

In the early days of the Cristianity, during those times when they where
persecuted, the various celebrations where adjusted to the dates of
pre-christian celebrations that had somewhat similar symbolism.
The Christ is a "bringer of light" and the winter soltice selebrations where
about the "return of the light".
Easter is about the Christ "return to life", and the coinsiding celebrations
where about the "return of life".
