Perhaps you could add an english translation of the not available yet
message.
It was not immediately obvious that the arrow in the wateringcan image
was for download. I expected it to take me back to the menu, in stead I
have now some of Gilles source on my machine. Or rather I haven't, tried
it twice; one archive has 3632 bytes missing and the other 4096.

Thank you!
Nice idea, nice images. But how the calendar actually works is a bit
confusing. Only 14 windows? No numbers? Do you have to remember which
images you already looked at? And clicking on the image is not a very
intuitive way to return to the house. For getting rid of a maximized
window without browser controls and obvious navigation elements, I
suppose many people just close the window like I did ;)

Hello Thierry,
The pictures are nice, but this is not an Advent Calendar.
An Advent calendar is a special calendar used by some Christians to count the
days of Advent.
The calendar reminds us of the coming of Jesus as a baby...
and the Second Coming of Jesus as King.
Advent - from the Latin word advenio,
meaning "to come", "the coming of Christ our saviour"
Adventus is the Latin word for "coming"

And why an advent calendar would necessarily be related to Christians
beliefs ?
My point of view is that christmas celebrations are a good opportunity
to regroup families and to take good time, whatever you believe in, and
that's what is coming up ! That leads me to say : this is an advent
calendar.

Um, what kind of web page is that? It wreaked havoc with my Konqueror

Because Christmas is about Christ!!!!
Because "Advent Calendar" has ONLY ONE meaning Advent of Christ!
It's like saying rgb<1,0,0> is Blue....... It is factually inaccurate.

Strange ... it's only simple text, 3 images and a little CSS for basic text
formatting. I have tried it on Konqueror 3.5.7 on Debian etch and I have no
problem.

You might not base yourself on appearances. In english, christmas is based on
"christ" because the religious side of this event has been felt as the most
important. In italian it is "Natale", for the same reasons. In french we say
"Noël", in german "Weihnachten", as you can see, there is no reference to
Christ because the relation between the population and the religion is weaker.
All this to say that an event can not have only one meaning : this meaning will
be different from one person to an other. To use your analogy, "blue" can
represent the sky as well as the water.

If someone wishes to ignore the traditions of Christmas, they will.
But, you missed the point of my response to the o/p, namely:
An Advent calendar is a special calendar used by some Christians
to count the days of Advent. The calendar reminds us of the coming
of Jesus as a baby... and the Second Coming of Jesus as King.
The DEFINITION of Advent Calendar is fixed. Just because my nephew was born on
December 25th, doesn't mean the Advent Calendar is about him.
>To use your analogy, "blue" can > represent the sky as well as the water.
The point of my analogy was to show that some things are defined.
If you wish to color your trees Blue for effect, it is fine.
If you want to call rgb<1,0,0> by French "rouge" fine, but not "bleu" .

Definitely, it looks like you are a religious extremist which cannot
accept the opinion of persons who don't have the same beliefs than you.
Ending the discussion with compassion for your closed mind which doesn't
even noticed that christianism promotes tolerance and respect for other
beliefs

Why "for effect" ? If you ever ask some Japanese/Chinese people
about the colours of grass, sky, sea, lake, and dark forest you
might be surprised by 98% of the answering people: same!
What you call Blue is an English concept. It convert relatively fine
within western cultures.
But can fail on others. Colours are the ones the most easily wrong,
especially if you have to describe them without picture (even by
sending a picture, if you do not know the gamma curve of your
relative, you might very well get it wrong: just have a fun in
povray, about brown & indian red. The rendering at gamma 1.0 and 2.2
is so different for a western eye!)
There is no point in assuming one's culture is right and the other's
cultures are wrong: the translation in English of the title might
have been hazardous, but instead of pinpointing details, you should
simply enjoy the offer.

I was writing to a person claiming French not Japanese/Chinese.
We therefore hold the same meaning if not the same spelling.
Your adding the information about other cultures is not applicable in this
context. However, I didn't know those items appear similar, maybe I learned
something.

Thierry decided to redefine the phrase "Advent Calendar".
This is the error, dismissing the existing definition.
And when I commented on his error and explained why it was error, he had no
recourse but to the discussion "with compassion" by referring to me as
"religious extremist" "your closed mind"

Continuing the wikipedia article:
"Many calendars have been adapted by merchandisers and manufacturers to
include a piece of chocolate or other confectionery behind each compartment.
These are often aimed at children who are counting down to Christmas and the
arrival of Santa Claus, and have often been criticised for not relating to the
Nativity and simply cashing in on Christmas sales."
And it looks like I am hardly the only one to complain about the change.

That's a cute one with the dejected bunny. :) The snow looks great too. Thanks

My child have an Advent Calendar with chocolates behind small
compartments and it's counting down the arrival of Santa Claus ("Pere
Noel"). We also have a pin tree and a string of flashing coloring lights
around the window, and we'll likely eat a cake shaped as a wood log
during xmas night.
All of this is coming back form a bunch of old mythology, some christian
related, and most not (after all, 25 december is around winder solstice
and that the only reason why there is a feast there).
It's not because I'm drinking wine that I believe in Bachus, and all
Ancient Greko-Roman mythology.
Some seems still to believe in Santa Claus here. Fine for them if
they're happy with it, but we shouldn't let them come bothering people
about that too often, please.
