I made this some years ago as a logo for a project. The project is gone,
but I recovered this scene and made some changes to the photons
settings.

Very pretty. How many years did it take to render (then and now)?

Then, I used an Intel Pentium 4 with 2.0GHz to render this scene. I
don't know any more how long it took, but I estimate that it took some
hours.
For now, I made some changes on the photons settings and the brightness
of the lightsource. Doing that, I was able to increase the rendering
speed by magnitudes. I forgot how long the 800x600 version took to
render, about an hour probably. Currently I'm making an animation with
400x300 images and less dispersion samples (i.e. 15). It takes about 9
Minutes to render one frame. One has to say, that I'm working now on a
processor with 2.5GHz (on one core).

You know you have been raytracing for too long when the animation you
render will be finished after yourself.
