I think the default for aa_level is 3 in 3.6 and later versions.

As noted somewhere else in this thread, the aa_level doesn't help this 
artefact, it seems it occurs in some way that aa_level is oblivious to. I 
tried aa_level 6 aa_threshold 0.1 and still had exactly the same artefacts.
