I was looking at some Black Opals on the net and thought I'd have a go
at rendering one.
Crits welcome!

Something's not quite balanced in the scene?

equilibrium of the ring ..
I mean if you got a knife to create..
Do you present it on the side or sharp edge on a realistic scene?
You ring is good enough to be represented on its side on the table ..else
you should build a little box if you want to show it on its actual position
..
..
and a little critic on the gold rendering
its look a bit plastic ..(which is the default value of roughness in the pov
seeting)
so you should reduce the roughness to 0.01 (instead of 0.05 defeult) in the
finish statement of gold texture ..

Actually Steve is going to make a ring (in RL) for me and this is the first
stage. Just a few early designs to get a rough idea, they are more like
working drawings. I thought since I was going to buy one I’d keep it in the
community.
I’m sure that he will be pleased at the compliments, I would be.

Oh, I see... unnatural environment.

But I've got a box too... ;o)
A different design this time.

That’s getting closer to my mind’s eye. If you could post your Gem’s texture
I’ll have a go this weekend. Even if you don’t I’ll still have a go -)
Thanks

Yes, sure, it's basically this for the 'flakes' inside the stone:
texture{
pigment{color rgb <.2, .9, .2>} //change colour to suit
finish{
diffuse 0.08
ambient .45
specular 0.6
reflection {0.4 metallic}
conserve_energy}}
I'll try some rounds and ovals next with different shanks. :o)

Nice box. The hinges should be covered from the inside and spring loaded. I work
in that domain, and have never seen any jewl box where the hinges are visible
from that point of view.

This is my go. I don't have a jewel box so I used an old music box
just to keep Penelope20k happy.

Ah, I see. You remember the setting as being really low. It is possible to
have a ring like that, but most designs would have a curved setting to fit
the finger. Did it not have this curve?

Yes I believe so but it is more than 20 years ago. And I never wore it so I
can't swear to it.
