Here: Front view of the imperial carrier SENECA. The command tower in
the middle has been completed, but there are still many details for me
to develop for the two side bays and parts of the ship center.
Background:
The SENECA is a giant ship and capable of carrying thousands of crafts
of all sizes. Inside its two side bays the SENECA can carry a view large
cruisers (as a mobile space station) and dozens or hundreds of the
smaller ship classes. Human crew is not neccessary as these imperial
space carriers are fully automatized. In resource-rich environments such
as asteroid fields or planets, it can even automatical harvest resources
required, automatically assemble probes and smaller vessels, and launch
them on a permanent base. This way, it can also repair itself.
The SENECA does not use any chemical propulsion system which is the
reason you won't see any open parts. The SENECA uses an internal
gravitron drive. The SENECA "was" built shortly before the jumping drive
came in use and made such huge long-range ships obsolete.
Scene File:
Already now, the file is designed to be used for animations, and I did
already a brief animation of ten seconds. The disadvantage is that each
frame takes its time due the many divisions I have to do, since I do all
coding "by hand", without any 3D editor. No polygon shapes used, just
divided standard shapes.
I also did a starbase which was partially hand-coded and partially
automatically generated through a self-written computer program. I might
use that program for some parts of the two side bays of the SENECA, as
well. But not sure yet.
Further intentions: creating jumper ships and many smaller vessels.

These two attached images are simply cropped details from your preview 3
and 4 images.
Just curious -- was the "happy face" intentional?
And when I enlarge the second image I can see it's just a hatch of some
sort and shadows. But with a normal, unexpanded view it looks (to me)
like a figure of a man holding a weapon.
This is NOT a criticism of your very impressive images and I'm not
suggesting changes. But I was somewhat amused at these two details.

Hello Larry,
never mind - I welcome criticism but I also understand easily that you just
mention it because of the funny nature of your observation.
Yes, you are right, these details look truly the way you have mentioned. But
that's entirely unintentionally, and also just based on the perspective.
The "smiley" is just a superstructure meant for conferences or meetings.
What you see are the roof windows of that structure.
And the "warrior" is caused by sensor arrays and antennas inside a large
bay.
It is nice that someone looks to my images, and I am happy to receive a
first feedback. I want to invite you all to give me more of your feedbacks!
Greetings,
Sven Littkowski

I'm sorry i can't see it. i just get htm files with strange image links like
src="cid:052201c66b12$5c5167a0$16b2a8c0@SVEN" but i don't see anything.
Is this a problem on my side?
I'm curious to see the images!

That's impressively Imperial indeed :-)
The little reserve I can have is that you should vary slightly the color en
intensity of the bay lights.
Regarding those bays, I thonk anti-aliasing has problems with hi rgb value
pixels, which version of povray are you using?

Hi Roman,
hmmm, sounds unusual. Let me ask you: do you see here any other image file?
Nearly each topic here has an image file. If you cannot see any graphics
here, you might check your settings. Do you use an e-mail program such as
Eudora or Outlook (Express)? Or do you use a web browser?

Hi Marc,
the very first of these previews was done with the full version of POV-Ray:
v 3.6, but all other previews (02 - 07) were done with the bbeta version of
the new POV-Ray, version 3.7.0 Beta 12a.
There are none of these "spot lights" remaining when using the beta version.
On the other hand, they say that radiosity and other features are not yet
fully completed which might be the only reason why the spot lights have
disappeared.
Greetings,
Sven

Hi Sven
I'm viewing this newsgroup with a web browser (i tried FireFox and IE6). i
see all the images on this page. The one of Larry above as well. Usually i
see:

In your case i just see:
Attachments:
Download 'iso-8859-1' (1 KB)
(one has 4KB but that's it)
When i download this files they contain html code for example:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html;
charset=iso-8859-1">

The src links in the image tags (if they are links at all) don't work.
Has anyone ever experienced similar problems? I have no idea what goes wrong
here.

The problem is that there is a difference between embedding and
attaching an image. You are embedding them, which makes them an
integral part of your HTML messages. You should attach them instead,
because apparently some software has problems with embedded images.
Outlook Express does allow using either method.
I don't remember the details because I switched from OE to Thunderbird
some time ago. Besides, right at the moment I'm using Linux so can't
check it out -- but the option is there.
It would probably cause fewer problems if you would switch to straight
text instead of HTML. It seems that HTML is rarely used in newsgroups
-- at least in the ones I'm familiar with. That choice can be selected
in OE as well.
One other minor quibble... All your images have been posted with the
same name "SpaceCarrier", so if anyone saves your images (as I do) they
all have to be renamed to do so. :-) (Use SpaceCarrier-1,
SpaceCarrier-2, ..., etc.)

I'm having the same problem, using Netscape Communicator as my browser. But
I think Larry Hudson's suggestion to Sven will solve it.
Looking forward to seeing the images, Sven!

Cool Earth-like desert moon, that 68 Cyg XIV-7! Did you make it also
with PoV-Ray?
And, yes, I really would like to know how long (in kilometers) the
SENECA carrier is altogether...
See you in Khyberspace!

Hi Jörg,
getting your good feedback is my pride! You want to know the SENECA's
length: the two large bays are the longest parts of the carrier, and they
range from approximately -200 to +1800. Each unit is a meter, as I am used
for the metric system. That means, that the SENECA is (a little bit more
than) 2 KM long!
The SENECA is a project for a SF computer animation, in fact, there is
already a small clip of 10 seconds. But the ship is not yet completed, I
just like to spice up the temporary previews with a nice environment. More
details are to be added to the SENECA, and I also still have to finish many
of the floors inside that giant ship. The floors do exist, but lack items
and other things.
About the backgrounds: no these backgrounds are made just by graphic program
or photo. But there are ways to make a POV-Ray universe (search for
"stars.inc").
Alright, I hope to hear from you (all) again!

Yes, and I have no problem with Thunderbird, but Roman Reiner did have
problems. I was merely pointing out that attaching images causes fewer
problems than embedding images. There is a difference between these two
methods.

PS. To Roman:
It might be worthwhile for you to consider using a real newsreader
instead of the web interface with a browser. I think Thunderbird is a
good choice, and it's free -- but there are many other good choices as
well. (Of course, Thunderbird is primarily meant for e-mail, but it
does newsgroups very well also.)

There is a significative difference between the HTML post with embeded image and text
with attached
image. HTML: 319 K, text: 324K.
Both shows up correctly here.

star.inc don't like AA! You may need to multiply the color_map values by some large
values. How
large depending on the method used and the recursion level.

Hi Alain,
in some of my previews I used the "stars.inc" file which I like a lot! I
have not encountered the problems with AA as you mention. Those files were
generated with switched on AA.
However, I appreciate your note and hope to get many more informations and
feedback from you.
Greetings,

Scene:
The mega preview showing the current stage of the imperial carrier
SENECA.
The interior of the two large bays comes soon to its completion, and I
will
continue then to work on the outside details of the bays and the middle
section.
PS: The "Preview 10 (1.0 MB): Imperial Carrier" contains a larger image
of the SENECA (6400x4800 pixels) and the render statistics.

Just out of curiosity, why are you using only one thread on a dual CPU
system? Is it just so you can keep using your computer in the meantime?

I'm actually using Thunderbird already but only for emails. I weren't aware
of its newsreader abilities. I'll try this now!
To sven:
Since you attach your images i can see them with the web browser without any
problems and your model is great!
Keep it up!

My pleasure! The fault was on my side - I should have done it from the very
first moment that way (attaching). Sorry again for the temporary
inconvenience.

Seeing features and their shadows as signs...
That reminds me for the stunning observation, that some surface feature on
planet Mars (some big mountain) would look like some sort of face.

Yep... Try a Wikipedia or a Google images search for "face on Mars"
(Google images gave 2.7 million hits...) :-)

I think, we see here on of the POV-Ray programmers (probably Mr. Buck or Mr.
Cason) in hi real environment, making thoughts how to improve POV-Ray for
those Earthlings...
Actually, the orign of this thinking POV-Ray programmer is not planet Mars,
they still come from Earth. But they are an olde race, a saurian race. At
the time the intelligent saurian species destroyed nearly the planet Earth
in one of their last wars against themselfes, they managed to settle for
some time on Planet Mars. But that was just a relatively short period in
their existence, because Mars was already unhabitable. So, when having had
all resources together and the scientific knowledge to travel much further
into space, they left Mars.
Now, some of them came back to observe the new intelligent life on Earth,
the mammal life (we humans). A long time they observe us. The first contact
happened thousands of years ago. Not in a physical way as everyone would
expect based on our movies, no, the first encounters are on a mind base:
they measure us on the closeness or distance between our cultural values how
a life should be lived (how to behave, how to handle situations), and how we
at the end of the day really life our life - how close we come to our own
moral ethics (which is: not even close). That is, how we're being evaluated
since centuries. The first contact had happened a long time ago, since then
we're always observed and measured in this very descent and unrecognizeable
way. Their guidelines in trans-species contacts are just requesting absolute
descentness, preventing large cultural shocks for the younger race.
Now, since humans evolve and have now computers, the Saurians brought now
their second tool of evaluating our species into the game: POV-Ray. This
tool allows them to get even a better understanding of our inner dreams and
values. The NASA image shows probably D. Buck or C. Casson (both are
sauropods) sitting and evaluating our posts in this forum. The more we
evolve, the more direct contacts they will allow us to see from them, that
is why we finally see now one of the evaluating POV programmers on that
photo.
Once they consider mankind ready for the final contact, we gonna meet them
physically.
