I tried (x,0,z) but it looked a bit boring. I agree the flying rocks look
wierd, but my brother might be able to get rid of them in photoshop when he
works on the pictures so I didn't fix them.

Wowie - how'd you do the green, inverted (planet above, not below) one?

VERY nice.

The planet's just a couple of spheres with granite based textures for the
ground and clouds. Then there's a scattering green media with a spherical
exponential density and high extinction which makes the colour more
interesting. Then there's a crazy emitting media for the sun in the bottom
right. Did you want to know about any specific part of it?

Yeah I like those, they're just a couple of planar patterns on the
sky_sphere.

I like the flying rocks, too. Adds some extra mystery to the scene. If I
would change anything, it would be the sand(?) in the foreground. The
shape looks odd.

Nope - I think I understand some of how it is made. I hope...!

I've wanted to try making something similar for a while now, now I've got an
idea where to start.

Thanks for the reply!

Picture 1 (the last one posted) with its floating rock parts instantly
reminded me of Roger Dean's Yes cover illustrations!

But the dunes need work certainly...

See you in Khyberspace!

Couldn't you just try (x,y/10,z) or something similar? I think it would
still allow for overhangs, while diminishing the appearance of floating
rocks.

And yes, I'm still around (sort of :).

The scales I'm using are f_granite(x/20,y/50,z/20) and IMO looks better for
this scene than any bigger or smaller numbers, apart from the floating bits.
Anyway this is just a background so it doesn't have to be all that perfect,
I have no plans to work on it further unless my brother requests fixes to it
:)
