What did you have in mind? That looks a bit like a /massive/ aurora 
borealis effect.

Well, I was trying to get a sort of interesting-looking ocean, but you 
can see ripple-like artifacts (caused by coincident surfaces, I 
suspect), and I discovered my isosurface of the Earth's contours wasn't 
lined up properly with the texture map of its land cover.

It's one of those cases where the unexpected results are more interesting
than the intended realism. It's quite nice to look at. It makes me want a
1280x1024 copy. :-)
