It's been so long since I posted to this group that I thought I'd better 
start with the ubiquitous plane & sphere.
Unfortunately it looks as if some bugs have crept in and damaged my code (or 
is it just a simple case of code rot?)

Nice! You may want to scale and translate your checker pigment in the 
y-direction (or whatever your sky is), to avoid the color changes in the 
holes.

Hmm.  I disagree -- that effect is one of the things that struck me as 
so interesting.  I'm not sure how it's done -- it doesn't appear to be 
simply y-scaling, which was my initial impression.

That's part of the code rot! A very typical case I'm afraid!   :-)

I can see where you're coming from but in the end I stuck with the image as 
it is, feeling (like Larry) that the colour changes added something to the 
image.
