I'd like to, but not sure how to go about it...

Oh my! I love it!

Not sure what else to say, but I felt it was worthy of praise.

And you call that "a few lights"?!

I was *wondering* how media with some lights could take so long! =)

Honestly though, is there really a significant visible difference between
the 45-light version and the single light version? Are you using the 45
lights to create an area light effect or what?

Yeah...area lights plus media are REALLY slow, compared to just using an
array of spot or point lights.

I find that very surprising... what evidence do you have that points to that
conclusion?

A very nice and poetic image!

um...*runs some test renders with a sphere with media*

array of 3x3 point lights: 31 s
3x3 area light, adaptive 0: 11 s (13 s with jitter)
3x3 area light, adaptive 1: 22 s (24 s with jitter)
3x3 area light, adaptive 2: 23 s (25 s with jitter)
...
hrm. I stand corrected.

Vertical line is cause by shadow cast by no_image no_reflection box used
to shape the spotlight to be like the array of spotlights in the other
image.
