This looks like what I'm after. Mind you it's a low quality render (no 
AA), so the object itself looks terrible. The floor nicely reflects 
(reflection{0.1}) the HDR image and the glass thingy causes massive 
amounts of caustics.

To get this, I used a photon count of 1e7 and the light source was 
increased in intensity to color <1,1,1>*500

Funny thing happened. I wanted to make the floor a photon target to see 
what knd of result I would get. So I added:

photons{
  target  1
  refraction off
  reflection on
  collect on
}
to the plane. But that caused MegaPOV to throw an error and the scene 
was rendered without photons being shot. Commenting this block out and 
photons were being shot again. I don't get it.

Rendertime for this image (with photons being loaded from file) is 287s

Maybe it don't like shooting photons at an infinite object? A solution 
would be to cut a hole in the floor and plug it with a box of the same 
size and texture. The floor don't have a photons block, the box does.
