Ahhh... that's good one!


What about trying exactly the same scene but using different lighting? Using 
a low-quality large area_light combined with very high focal blur (with low 
aperture) settings results in fast renders with very smooth soft shadows. 
(use jittering in the area_light)

   [0.75 0.05]
   [0.80 0.10]
   [1.00 0.70]
   }}
}

You must notice that this texture work fine with HDRI, but I don't how 
it works without... :-)
