the following code gives different results in POV3.6 than in POV3.5 (I tried
to minimalize the code :))

camera{location -z}light_source{-500rgb 1}sphere {0,.25pigment{rgb
1}finish{ambient x*.5specular 1}}

Using POV3.5, I get what I expect: a sphere, with a redish ambient and a
white highlight, but using POV3.6 I hardly get the highlight-part.

The problem seems to be the colored ambient light. With "ambient .5"
instead of "ambient x*.5" I get the highlight like I expect it.

Another strange thing is that the preview (+sp8 +ep4) shows it the right
way.

I attached the resulting images.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

cu!

since you guys always want a minimal code, I minimized it even more :p

light_source{-500 1}sphere {z,.2pigment{rgb 1}finish{ambient x*.5specular

I dont think minmal code == Short Source Code Competition ;)

perhaps default values for specular + roughness are different?

Yet, apart from producing obfuscated code (why using x for a color???), you
did not at all provide the information full needed for a bug report. Either
the settings you used, nor the platform.

Either you're a very good actor, or you really are a very unpleasant man.

This is no bug-report, otherwise I would have posted it in povray.bugreports
This is only a question: am I missing something, or do other people have the
same problem? If I am missing something, a setting maybe, then it shouldn't
matter which platform I use. If it really seems to be a bug, then, and only
then, maybe I will file a bugreport, with a decent minimal code and all the
info you need...

Anyway, if you don't have anything usefull to say, then why even take the
time to hit the reply-button? Do you like to get on people's nerves ?

cu! (generally speaking, I have actually no wish to ever see you in
particular)

What exactly did I do to you that you insult me?

Then you obviously never read the bug reporting guidelines, because that
would have been the wrong way to go. Please read:

I tried this under Pov 3.6.1 and 3.5 and there's little or no
difference (win98).

It's not just what you did to me, but your general behaviour against other
people, including me. It's your tone that's very unfriendly. Your use of
punctuation (like the use of three questionmarks in "(why using x for a
color???)", which makes it look like you think only retarded people use 'x'
inside a color-definition, when 'x' just types about three times faster than
'red' and gives exactly the same results and 'a more minimal code' (which
was meant to be a joke, but you didn't seem to get it)), your choice of
words and your complete lack of humour (or smileys... it looks like you're
someone who never laughs... At least I can't imagine you laughing or even
smiling).
There's nothing wrong with *what* you say, just with *how* you say it. And
I know I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Come to think of it... the way I'm saying things, can use some improvement
too, or did anyone actually understand the nested brackets in the paragraph
above without reading it more than once? :)

That's right, I haven't...

...but I have now, but apparently the way it should be done is the way I
thought it should be done, so again: this was never meant to be a
bug-report, just a question: did I miss something, or might this be a bug?

pff, maybe I shouldn't have put the word "bug" in the subject...

strange... I'll try it later today on my WinXP-computer, now first I'm
going to check if I really used identical settings.

The difference might be 3.6.1 vs. 3.6
