A few months ago, Scott Ailing, a singer from NYC, approached me asking
whether I could provide cover art for his debut CD. He had had a picture
of mine (Serenity) as his wallpaper for about a year and was interested
in having a modified version for the cover, not the usual diamond case
but a cardboard trifold. The main modification he wanted was to have
some mechanical players for the instruments. We reached an agreement,
and after some tests I provided three pictures, two modified from the
Simplicity series for the covers and one modified from Serenity for the
three-wide center-fold, and instead of making some more or less
stereotypical robots, I turned the string instruments into a kind of
self-players and one of them into a harpichordium player. I have
attached the two outer cover pictures -- larger version of them, the
center-fold and the picture for the 5' x 6' release party poster (all
without titles, which I didn't design) can be found at

(with a link to Scott's CD info at his web site)

I haven't seen the printed covers yet as the record hasn't been released
(the release party will be on Friday, August 13, at the Lincoln Center,
NYC), but Scott wrote telling me that the proofs looked very good,
people were blown away -- as he put it.

Nice :)

Only one thing is IMHO a bit wrong - the sky... perhaps use something
different then standard simple sky4 :)

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words.

About the sky: this sky has become one of my hallmarks. It looks real
enough and unreal enough for my purposes at any resolution and doesn't
slow things down when I'm doing my typical final renders at 7620x5080.
It is just a background which is supposed to be nondescript and not to
interfere with anything. One may say this sky is bland but one cannot
say it is really unnatural, I've seen skies very much like that and I
suppose so has everyone else--ignoring the blue which remains constant
from the horizon to the zenith, but this isn't reality, after all, just
a figment of my imagination. In the long run, I might do something about
it, but now I feel I've got much more important things to worry about.
