I've been trying off and on for months to come up with a lighting setup
to fake an HDRI lit image. This image unofficially qualifies as my
longest render ever..

Wow nice! How did you do it?

The only thing that bothers me is that torus - I can't see if it floats
or if it's on the floor.

And how long did it take to render? Your longest render - well, if they
simply made better CPUs faster than we're making more complex scenes :)

I like it very much!

Can you explain briefly your method?

Fernando

Briefly, picture a plane with some objects scattered about. A hollow
half of a sphere is placed over, enclosing the scene. Imagine the
sphere half as, say, stained glass with a multitude of lights shining
in. In this case 72 lights. Tweak scene for months, as required.

See my reply to Mr. del Cueto's post.

It's on the floor. The torus is elliptical, the camera angle makes it
look round - perhaps leading to the optical confusion.

About 21 hours on a 3.2 gig P4. I'm not really much of an optimizer...
