Yes, I think it looks really like milk !!!!!
but the milk is a bit more "yellow" or "creamy" instead of gray

Milk comes in different colours depending on the source and how it was
processed. Also the lightsource can affect the colour. I find the image very
convincing.

i think it looks like milk (got thursty). of course healthy milk has
more fat...
maybe glass could have another color or background color tricks a bit.
and a second soft light source should make it more realistic. it looks
slightly like a picture made in a bunker(?).

Haven't seen a glass of milk in several years, but it looks exactly how

Is that a real render or a studio photo? Ho! That hint of banding in the
shadow, it must comes from an area light. Adding photons maping and
making the area light dencer with jitter will make it more realistic.

While I agree with others that it looks very good, I'd also say that there
is too much contrast in the milk itself. In my experience, even with such
an extreme lighting condition, milk doesn't get that bright *or* that dark.
Of course, this might be a deficiency in the lighting and not the milk
itself. I've run into the same problem, which is why I went with soda pop
instead of milk for my test renders :)
Good job otherwise, and I can't wait for the next version!

Good.
I think it needs a higher definition area light and perhaps another light
source to give it that "real" edge.

it does. But, with media it seems like area lights slow rendering down
quite a log. I tried Jitter as others have suggested, and wasn't pleased
with the results.
I'm running another render, this time with some more scenery, I've
adjusted the lighting slightly. One significant change was doubling the
dimensions of the area light 4x4 samples, now.
And it's taking it's sweet time to render.

Believe it or not, there are two light sources, The second is quite
toned down from the first. Media and lighting seem to sometimes be a
very careful balancing act.
This is really one of the first times I have had the opportunity to play
with the media a bit more and actually get good results.

Yep. However the result are worth it with PovRay. I did a very simple
scene, a pen on a counter top. final rendering 30x30 light + two other
no_shadow point lights as fillers. Sweeeeeeeet, left it running overnight
.... and half the next day.

Actually, this was my inspiration. To me, the milk in those images seems
to have a bit of a yellow cast that I don't like. But -- that may be
closer to realism.

Hehe, I don't drink milk, and my fiancee only drinks skim. I must have
forgotten what whole milk looked like. ;)

180° off. I drink almost exclusively water and tea, but they're not as
much fun to render. hmmm. I guess tea *is* amber colored.

Good enough for government work.

I'd say so. You gotta do something about that glass, though, I'm getting
visions of someone slicing their lips off. ^^;

Almost, but it looks very good even now! The upper bright layer makes it
look like there is some "thinner" liquid on top of milk. Could you post
an example with not so hard/bright lighting?
A few questons:
1. Is this done with regular Pov 3.6?
2. How did you scale the milk itself? Is it slightly bigger or slightly
smaller than the container?

I'll post another later. I'll probably bump up the area lights and run
it overnight.

Yes. The media is painfully slow, though.

I have always scaled the liquid slightly larger than the inner surface
of the container.

Argh missed!
Tea is more or less deep amber indeed but you know it wasn't what I had in
mind
Sorry :-)

Hi Mike,
this looks similar to milk: I think it's too
transmissive, esp. the meniscus has a
strange transparent (or dark) part --
see attached picture.

Just looking at a glass of 2% milk. A little yellower and a hint of a
darker line like the one that you show. For me, it look very good as
skim milk witch is whiter.

Yes, very milky, although it seems to have a bit of water on it... :)
