Now rendering:

Sunrise with clouds..

This was inspired by Tek's sunrise animation using scattering media. It's
amazing how the clouds really bring out the orange and yellow tones in the
image..

Right now, the clouds are a bit rough.. I've noticed quite a lot of
artifacting when the clouds are in the distance. I created a macro to
generate "cumulus-like" cloud patters using Granite as the pattern function.
I'd like to expand my library to having some cirrus, stratus, and perhaps
cumulonimbus.. but for now, the puffy little things with silver lining are
enough ;)

They do add a lot more visual interest than my scene had.

By a strange coincidence I'd also been thinking about doing a sunrise with
clouds. Someone mentioned Gilles Trans' makeclouds on these groups recently, and
that started me looking into that again. I'm currently rendering wallpaper-sized
versions of the beautiful test scenes for it, but I'm thinking next I might try
combining those test scenes with some of my sunrise animation tricks to get a
really cool animation. Although I'm not sure I have the patience to render an
animation with that kind of complexity!

I'd be interested in seeing a higher-res frame from a little later in the
animation (i.e. when the sun's a bit higher in the sky), to better see those
distant clouds. At the moment it's hard to tell how good they look because
they're so small (though maybe that's a good thing?!).

Can't wait to see :) I should give Gilles' macros a try, The one thing I
have found annoying when dealing with media is how painfully slow it can
get.

Yep. I rendered a slightly larger frame and was very dissapointed, The
clouds seem to break up into bands, After many tweaks to the image, I think
I finally have the clouds looking better, but it will take quite a while to
render the animation, now. I have a 1024x768 version of one of the later
frames rendering, now (with more cloud cover) as well as the animation
running deep in the background. I expect it will take a good long while
before the animation is done.

Nah, it's a plain "dirt-colored" floor ...

ooh, that doesn't look quite right. I think the clouds are way too dark for that
sky, so maybe they should be less opaque (or maybe in the real world they'd be
recieving some radiosity, afaik pov doesn't model media illumination from
radiosity). And maybe they should be at a higher altitude, since the light seems
to be hitting them entirely from the top whereas at sunset higher clouds will
get lit a little from below.

his makecloud macros are great. DF3 clouds are very fun to play with. i love
seeing the media interaction of the light when you move it around.

on a side note, i noticed that a few of the tga's spit out by his
makecloud2.pov work very well as heightfields for islands.
