Back in 1999, I wrote a macro for generating a cobbled street.
I have now rewritten it, to enable it to be traced on a heightfield or an
isosurface. Three patterns are available (see images).
The macro is posted in p.b.u. under subject: Cobbled street.
Enjoy!!

Very nice, I've checked this out and immediately added it to my library,
which is the best compliment I could ever give you.

Thanks!

Hey, just had a thought. You've created a macro for placing blocks into a
surface which is very cool. How about extending your coolness!?

Your could use that same technique to build a mesh that traversed a
landscape, which would create a memory saving alterative and allow you to
apply a "road" like texture to the whole thing!

Just an idea. ( But I really hope you do it, cos your a clever
chap!!!!!!!!!!)

Nice ! Another useful pattern would be the typical Parisian street pattern.

Notice how the stones are all loose and ready to be picked up for rioting,
btw ;-)

Wow, very useful, and very timely. I'll be immediately appropriating it
(with proper attribution, of course!) in one of my scenes.

Thank you!
I posted it just for that reason. Otherwise, I would have kept it to my

Yes!!! You did it! I have been thinking (of and on) on this but had not
found the time to do it. So... How did 'you' do it?

To much honor, really! I am a simple POVer without particular skills. :-}
Hmm... Alternatively, I have used image maps of cobblestoned surfaces, of
course, on a HF (or isosurface) to simulate just that, and it renders pretty
fast. For backgrounds that is fine (even for foregrounds sometimes). But the
real thing is better in the foreground. You could combine those then...

Thanks! Yes, I have been thinking along that line (not rioting, for the time
being, at least!) and would like to do it. Have to think about how to do
this...

Hmm... The problem here is that the pattern 'desintegrates' towards the
boundary of each arc. In reality, the last stone of a given arc is the first
stone of the adjacent one, like uou can see in the photograph refered to by
Gilles Tran.
In itself, this seems easy to model (I tested something in Moray today), but
I came up against a fundamental difficulty that concerns the different
curvatures of the inside and outside of each arc of stones. At the ends, the
stones overlap! (>> see the attached image) and adjacent arcs are not well
integrated.

This thread gives me ability to post something I always wanted to share for
inspiring somebody but couldn't because of photo nature ;-) Here are stone
stairs I made in my hause. The key of the design is that external edge has
doubled length of inner edge. To make it on-topic this was of course
visualized in POV-Ray before building.

just playing, can you try pattern 2, R=0.333, Crack=0.03

result looks slightly weird ? i was sort of expecting a brick wall
laid out flat

have you any suggested ranges for the various values ?

I have not really worked out a range of values. It is trial and error I
guess. In your example, the main culprit is Crack which draws the stones
apart. In combination with the size of the stones (determined by N), the
result will be more or less acceptable. In any case, keep Crack fairly low.
There are, obviously, some draw backs to the method I used <sigh>, but
overall, avoiding weird cases, works pretty well.

istr that bricks tend to an approx 0.333 height/width ratio

You know, your example happens sometimes in the real world. Very old,
abandoned pavements may have much enlarged cracks because of vegetation
growth between the stones. So, it would be interesting to use it in
combination with growing grasses in a derelict premise. Idea for a scene,
isn't it?

ok, thought lets try a patio type size - square blocks

N=10, R=1 no other changes

anyone got a soil textute for a height field ?

Many thanks and congratulation, Thomas Le Grand !

It is EXACTLY what I need for the scene I have currently in workshop (see
attachment). I will try it as well for walls on old filthy buildings.

Thank you! Glad it proves to be useful. Yes, I think it could easily be
applied on walls too!
