So, this is a hat I've made out of primitives
for the worm. I was going for those
sailor-/winter-type hats to keep his bare little
head warm.
Still this one looks too much like rubber,
and I'm also thinking that the modelling is
too... mathematical. My next go will be with
a lathe-type mesh + deformations, to see if
that'll be any better. Any other suggestions?

Regards,
Tim

In the navy, this was called a Watch Cap. I think it is a good choice for
the worm. It will give him a kind of blue collar look. I like the double
brim design you have made for it.

Keep up the great work, you are one of the inspiring artists I see
supporting this community.

Thanks for the comment! I'll see if I can keep
the double-brim design if you like it so much for
the mesh version. The mesh would have the
advantage of UV-Mapping and possibility for
displacement mapping, which is why I intend
to go that way.

And thanks for the praise! One could argue
if I'm that inspiring, I don't turn many scenes
out, but I'm especial thankful for the "supporting
this community" part. I've found that the news-
groups have always answered my questions and
helped me evolve further with my image-attempts,
and there's no reason why I shouldn't pay it
back! :-)

First is CSG, second is Mesh made with my BSplines
and Mesh-Modifying-Macros.

On the mesh, I plan to uv-map a bump-map which
looks like its stitched, if thats the word... You know,
wool and such. Made by grandma. Something like
that. If anyone has a suitable bump-map for that,
I'd like the link...

Ah well. Aside of some minor issues with the hat
and the UV-mapping, I think this'll be the final
hat for him. My brother says its a little too big,
but I think it makes the character warmer. More
of a comfy guy. :-)
Any suggestions about the color? I like the blue,
but the texture is still the plastic texture from
before. I'll work on that later.

Regards,
Tim

Why do you think that? Is the hat too broad?
I'd rather take a mesh, as it has some advantages
for mapping and deformations (e.g. wind, though
this would only be a factor if the hat isn't too
tight around his head).
What I'm actually going for: it's supposed to be
some "regular" worm, nothing special. E.g. a
worker-worm would have one of those hard-plastic
hats. Still, the worm should be some sort of lazy
guy, not too cleanly dressed, stuff not 100% fitting,
thus the slightly too large hat.

This is the one that I like the most. I do not how to say it, but I think
the worm looks more like a cool guy with this hat. With the mesh version,
the worm looks more like an older, more serious man, a salesman or something
like this.

I'm not very good when it's time to choose color for my own models, so
imagine for others.... But to be honnest, I like the color you choose, It
makes a good contrast.

Nice work, it's looking good so far!

Ciao!

Great work.
I like the first hat better.
Perhaps a draker blue (navy) would fit better.

I'll have to play with the color once I get

I think so. Maybe not as much as the CSG one.
You might want to be able to stretch it for certain
cartoonish effects. So you wouldn't want it too
tall to start with.

I think is getting very close to how I want
it to look. I'll work some more on the textures

just a rough first test.
Once I've got a wrap on the Hat, I'll
see to it that the mouth gets its final finishes

And I think I should begin preparing a

and such. (And lure visitors to my site ;-)

It all depends on how slapstick you want to get.
In animated cartoons, animators tend to put
everything to work for them, even if it's just a
little.

I'm thinking about making the texture

Now, the original texture was scaled down,
along with the deformation-map, and I
think its better. I've also made some color-
adjustments to the texture so that the
fabric is more pronounced.
The mesh for the hat is made of 16000
uv-mapped smooth-triangles which sums
to 4.7 MB. Parsing is around 20 seconds
or so, so animating it would be possible.
For really detailed close-ups, I might even
use a larger mesh...
Anyways, animating it physically correct
would be one thing, in a cartoon-like fashion
another. Actually simulating something
realistic with the hat is a no-no if I want to
(and thats what I intend to do) stick to
pure POV-Script (at least for this short).

Now, with this realistic hat, I'm thinking if
I should try to create a more realistic texture
(but no subsurface scattering) for the worm's
skin... I guess it depends on how much the
later scenery will be stylized, rather than
photorealistic. I do plan on making imagemaps
with my Digital Camera... Well, we'll see.
I guess though, in any case, that this is a warp
on the Hat.

Regards,
Tim

Well, the hat is actually a rectangular
mesh, and for now, the inside is
hollow. Stretching/warping can be done
in all kinds of way: using the Vector-
Positions as basis, its relative position
in the rectangular array... Its actually
parsed and calculated in POV-SDL,
so its VERY flexible, cause I've got
access to everything. I could for example
animate the BSpline (my POV-SDL
implementation of Bezier-Splines) with
which I've modelled the lathe-like outline
of the mesh. UV-Mapping is done auto-
matically by my Mesh-Modifying-Macros,
so I won't get any troubles with that...

Did you have something specific in mind?

: so its VERY flexible, cause I've got
: access to everything. I could for example
: animate the BSpline (my POV-SDL
: implementation of Bezier-Splines) with
: which I've modelled the lathe-like outline
: of the mesh. UV-Mapping is done auto-
: matically by my Mesh-Modifying-Macros,
: so I won't get any troubles with that...
:
: Did you have something specific in mind?

Oh, well, basically, you can stretch
meshes etc like any other object in
POV-Ray. But when you've got all
vertices at hand, you can do position-
based transformations, like only the
right side of the mesh, and gradually
turn it to non-deformed to the left,
stuff like that.

Thanks!
Yeah, the texture does look great,
knowing that its just a quick pic taken
with my digicam (where I only looked
after no shadow being on the sweater).
I'll probably get many more textures
for the short that way. Not only because
it seems an easy and fast way to get
realistic textures, but also because it
might be a useful addition to texture-
creation for photorealistic images in
my future artistic life...

Regards,
Tim
