I tried it but I won't post the result since it turned out, AFAICT, the

What did you want to happen? I'm not quite sure what you meant with
black areas.

There are dark areas on the glass shapes. I figured they might be smaller
with a higher max_trace_level.>

Just curious: I wonder if one could subtract one image from another in
something like Gimp and see exactly what changes from image to image?

They're in the right places for images of the ground plane (note the
sequence of sky colors). If they were artifacts, they'd be on *both*
limbs of the blobbie.
