...was not a reflective ball over a checkered plane so I post one now
instead.
The ball is not only reflective but also refractive and uses dispersion and
photons for a total render time of 20h.

OK.. welcome here.  :o)

What are those round spots in the ball? Shadow is too dark (but realistic
when there is only one lightsource and a black sky). Specular reflection is
almost invisible although the material is glassy?  Nice color fades due to
dispersion!

The spots are bubbles of air in the glass.
I too think the shadow is a little dark. I hoped the photons would have
spread a bit more to fill the shadow. I actually have no idea of what
happend to the specular highlight. It was more visible in my test render.

I think, the documentation says always to turn off photons for the glass
itself. Not sure wether this is realistic but it has an effect on speculars.
