This is the blue channel of the image with improved contrast.
I think it looks like concrete...
...and better then the color version.
The cool thing is that you can choose if you want the light from the top or
the bottom by selecting the blue or the red channel.

Looks like the rock in my fish tank at the beginning...Like part of a coral
reef...like the grayscale better for details..

I hate it when picture like this need so much time to render. They are so
beautiful!! If it weren't for the time those images need, I would order you
animate it..... :)

As Chris said, it looks like a coral reef :P
When I first looked at it, i thought 'that might make a nice depth map'. You
might want to check out Batronyx's SISRay image and see if you can do
anything with it. news:3e3c85d8@news.povray.org

Maybe I've mixed and poured too much concrete but this really looks like
splashing mortar or concrete had frozen in place and dried. I think it is
great. And yeah, I didn't think the color one was as good, or was just too
dark.

And an interesting thing to try for some effect.

To me it looks like melted lead cast into water.

It looks great!
But I don't get it.
An image is flat and this surface expands in three dimensions.
How????

It's an isosurface. The object is based on a 3d noise formula. No height
fields involved. (I assume that's what you're puzzled about)

Yes I thought you used a image_map pigment as function but that's clear now.
