Just something I left running last night, render time 5hrs 38mins - pity jpg
compression seems to have munged the edges

Rendered from a low point of view looking into the glass elements - always
avoided this shot before due to high render times on my old PC, the red arc
inside the lense is actually comming from the red wall behind the lense.

Does the lens work if you render a scene looking *through* it?

I hope so! With some luck you'll get REAL lens flares!

This is through the lens (1hr 15mins) with minor Photoshop contrast
enhancement

no lens flare - although I think if I tweaked the phong properties of the
lenses I could get some

the image is a bit distorted, but not bad considering I only accurately
modelled the outside of the lens, and used guesswork for the elements (and
only modelled those which you could clearly see from the outside of the
camera)

Your lense camera is very nice. I think it's possible to create
a lens flare maker. I'v try it using three reflective lenses
and put the pov-camera between two of them.

I think we're going into the right direction here! I came up with a
lensflare idea like this about a year ago. Never thought about it after
that, because I'm too lazy/busy. Need to sleep sometimes... :-)

I put together a real camera lens about a year ago during beta testing and
had some successful results with lens flares, however I can no longer get it
to work with the final release. (web link
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/19888/)
I used fresnel reflection with a visible light source as opposed to using
specular or phong highlighting. The key to realistic lens flares, is
realistic lens series, as the geometry and properties of the lens are what
causes the particular details of the flares. Unless you are or know an
expert on lenses, then this informatin is difficult to find, but I did
eventually find one example, but I can't remember the link (there is some
interesting info here though, I'm not sure how useful
http://www.jmlopt.com/index2.aspx), ah here it is
(http://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/fall98/cs426/assignments/ray/ca
mera.pdf). If anyone is interested, I can try put the scene back together
and post it.
